My grandmother says that family are the people that, when you knock on their door, have to let you in. I come from a very large, diverse family. We have Mexicans, white folks, some Sicilians, Pacific Islanders, some Japanese, and various mixtures of these people. Plus many family friends who have been ‘adopted’ into the family. To me, family has several different meanings. Of course there are the people we are related to. And there are the people who are important to us and we are important to them. We are very fortunate of these 2 catagories overlap – but as this is the real world, that doesn’t always happen. Unfortunately some people must create a family for themselves. I am fortunate enough to come from a very close family – and most of the people are people I would want for my friends even if they weren’t my relatives. To me, there is no formula for what makes up a family. Family is a group of people who care about you and love you for who you are. They are the people who will be there with you for the ups and downs of life. They are the people who are there when your children are born AND are there for you when one of those children breaks his leg jumping off the house. They are the people who come to celebrate your new house AND helped you move all your stuff into that house.
