WilliamParticipantWhat’s the main difference between the Presbyterian Church and Evangelicals?

TimParticipantEvangelicals are generally recognized as Born-Again christians who put a strong emphasis on a personal relationship with God, marked by: a continued (regularly, if not daily) commitment to the Bible, belief that the Bible is inerrant (without error), belief that testifying and witnessing to others about their faith is important and an overall sincerity and stong devotion to their maturing faith. Clearly this is a broad definition that many christians of many denominations fit into (Presybterian included). The Presbysterian church (in general) is a liturgical denomination. Focusing on certain set rites and traditions in their worship service (set number of hymms and prayers in a specific order, among other things). Most evangelical churches do not rely on a strict adherance to tradition and liturgy like the Presbyterian church does. Of course there are exceptions and varying degrees to everything I have mentioned.

KevinMemberThe question is difficult to answer because the terms refer to two different things. Presbyterian refers to a specific denomination which has certain historical and theological connection to the Reformed tradition in Switzerland (and later Scotland) begun shortly after Luther began the Protestant movement. Evangelical does not refer to any specific denomination per se (though some churches and denominations include evangelical in their names), rather it describes a particular approach to the Christian faith. Evangelical Christians are those who hold strongly to the good news of faith and grace over works and the sacraments. Evangelicals tend to have an intensely personal and individual faith which believes that one cannot know salvation except though Christ. I think that in this regard most Christians can claim to be evangelical, even Presbyterians! I have a sense that William was asking a different question and I hope he would write again with some more information about what he meant by Evangelicals.

Sara28326ParticipantThe two main differences are that (a) Evangelicals believe they are directed by the Bible to spread the Gospel to nonbelievers so they can be saved and (b) Presbyterians don’t believe in the gifts of the spirit, such as speaking in tongues and laying on of hands. Also the mainstream denominations such as Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian and Lutheran are much less lively in their services and more bound by traditions (which a lot of people find lovely and comforting.

PaulParticipantA Presbyterian’s relationship with her/his God is much more personal and private. In other words, we usually don’t wear our religions on our sleaves (or t-shirts or bumper stickers or…), and you usally will not see much public demonstration of religion from a Presbyterian. At the same time, that releationship is more intelectual than emotional. On the other hand, Evangelicals appear to be very demonstrative. The Presbyterian USA web site describes the church’s doctrine, if you are interested.

Ed-M25544ParticipantWhile I’m neither, it’s my understanding that Presbyterian is a specific denomination with a definite set of dogmas/discipline and Church hierarchy/structure that applies to all members, while Evangelical can be used to describe a style of worship as well as a particular denomination. I believe the Evangelical churches aren’t as closely affiliated with each other as the Presbyterian churches are, nor are they necessarily bound by the same dogmas/discipline.

ADavisParticipantI am a Presbyterian seminary student. In my eyes, in a larger sence, Presbyterians are evangelicals. An evangelical is someone who carries the good news of the gospel into the world, and Presbyterians do that. However, in the US, the term ‘evangelical’ has a narrower term. Here, evangelicals tend to be Biblical fundamentalists (literalists), and tend to emphysize that individuals need to convert to Christianity. Some Presbyterians are fundamentalists, but most take a neo-orthodox or a liberal view on the Bible. We tend to emphysize coversion less. We tend to emphysize community over the individual.
