When refering to Native Americans as a whole, not by specific tribe, what is the preferred term? American Indian, Indian, Native American or some other term?

It is always best to use the name of the tribe you are discussing but when that is not possible I would say american indian is the best. "native american" is a profoundly misleading term that was made up by guilt ridden white liberals in the 70's.
