Brian23019ParticipantWhy do people seem to feel it’s OK to make fun of men who’ve lost their testicles or penis through cancer or an accident, yet no one (at least that I know of) would even consider making fun of a woman who had lost her breasts, or had her ovaries taken out through a hysterectomy?

Priscilla30288ParticipantI don’t think it’s OK to make fun of men who’ve lost their testicles or penis through cancer or an accident. I think the reason why some people might do that is that men have traditionally had so much more power than women and that still applies in some parts of the world. Even in the Western world, we have not achieved gender equality.

Mr. DickersonParticipantYes, it is a double standard. Side note: did you lose the tomatoes or the cucumber? Or did you just toss out the whole salad? Hey, this is the kind of crap we have to put up with. Men are just clowns and we are left with no choice but to laugh at our own dismembered friends. Imagine if John Wayne Bobbit was a woman who had had an injury of equal magnitude to her sexual organs. I don’t hear any women laughing now. But if we are supposed to laugh at injuries to our little buddies, I think that women should laugh at their mammary mishaps. I am sick of the double standard as well! Perhaps somethings should remain private and free of mockery regardless of gender.

Ethan J.ParticipantIf comedians made jokes about women misfortunes, in general there would be a backlash by feminists and probably many women in general. In general men prefer to stare at ‘perfect’ breasts, not make jokes about mutilated ones and would not want to hear these jokes. Most men however have no problems making fun of penile injuries because they are male and are not repulsed joking about their anatomy. The men who do have penile injuries are ashamed or unwilling to make their voices heard.

Dan31668ParticipantI notice the same thing. Immediately after the John Wayne Bobbit incident, there was an endless onslaught of Leno/Letterman jokes and whatnot. And I remember seeing this movie called ‘Folks’ where Tom Selleck’s character lost one of his testicles in a flagpole incident, and it became a running joke for the rest of the movie. And in a movie out now called ‘Ready to Rumble’, there must be about 50 different graphically portrayed ‘low blows.’ I guess society thinks that men are supposed to ‘take it’ and tough out whatever comes their way, but women are seen as having a much more tumultuous and emotional struggle with such a loss. With a man losing his, one thinks of Uncle Roy stepping on a land mine in Korea or a cousin getting in a nasty motorcycle accident. With a woman, one thinks of their sister or wife struggling with illness and emotional strife.

Tony DelgadoMemberI guess it’s all part of the hostility that American society feels towards men thanks to distorted feminist prejudice. The fact is that not only people make fun of male injuries, but society at large doesn’t seem to care about the high dose of violence against men in real life and in the media.
