Why do some people make up outlandish lies given the slightest opportunity? I am not talking about ‘white lies’ to get oneself out of a jam, but ‘tall tales’ that attempt to enhance one’s accomplishments. For instance, I once worked with a fellow who made up, among others, stories about how he basically created the ‘Dancing Baby’ program (the ‘Ugachaka baby’ on the TV show ‘Ally McBeal’) — all he did was got the program off the Internet, as I later found out — and another time I mentioned something about soldering and he started in this tale about having written a textbook on soldering that is used in military training! Another fellow I knew created a wild tale about having served as a secret operative in Vietnam, receiving numerous decorations that he couldn’t tell anyone about until he discovered that he didn’t have a long time to live. He died a few months later and the local newspaper listed his Vietnam service in the obituary! It is as though these people get you in a situation where you really can’t challenge them without having them becoming highly indignant, then they proceed to insult your intelligence with even wilder lies. I’d be interested in hearing from someone with a psychologist’s or psychiatrist’s background why certain people do this.
