As a sales person at a gift store I was supposed to at least try to ask every customer if I could help them. One man in a wheelchair immediately took offense, asking me if I thought he needed help. I was floored. I tried to explain as neutrally as I could that this was part of my job. Can anyone suggest from his point of view how I could have done my job without offending him?

One thing to realize is that disabled people are basically like other people. As a person in a wheelchair myself, I prefer a sales clerk to approach me only when I seek help in locating or accessing a particular item that I'm interested in purchasing. Just make yourself available to the customer if he/she needs assistance.

It sounds like this guy has some issues. It is not your fault that he took offense at an offer for help. If you were polite, there is nothing more you could have done.
