Nikki20066ParticipantI assume that people say those things because they want you to know that they are not homophobic. There are probably people who would avoid you or treat you badly after learning that you are a lesbian. They are trying to let you know that they won’t. Also, since homosexuals, especially open ones, are very much a minority, they probably don’t have enough experience dealing with people telling them they are gay to make the kinds of responses you would prefer.

J.S.MemberI’m gay and if someone said that I wouldn’t be offended in any way. To me, you saying she’s a woman and we’re gay is kinda looking for a reaction. You get it’s ok, same as ‘no big deal’. But I’ve never heard a straight person saying she’s a woman and we’re straight. Aren’t you the one being a little bit discriminative? You came in saying we’re gay. They said they are ok with it. I think you are putting too much meaning into the words.

RickMemberThose who remark ‘ Oh, that doesn’t bother me’ or ‘Hey-I’m cool with that!’ comes from a lifetime of thinking they are in some position of superiority, as if we are asking for their approval, witch we ain’t. It’s likely they don’t mean to be so obnoxious but they cannot help it. Straights-we do not look for your approval in our being alive and gay. Get over yourselves.

AshleyParticipantPeople say that because it’s still seen as okay to be against gay people(like think they should hide in small dark holes or something)and they’re just patting themselves on the back thinking they’re so pc though I wouldn’t take it personally even when you get like Catholics or Portugese I still hear nasty things(really stupid things too like Catholic women don’t like sex(?) and just insulting stuff so.. I guess you could look on the bright side and say they’re more in your face than behind your back and you can hit it head on atleast
