As a child, my mother took me to Sunday School every week and exposed me to all the rituals of the church. Since then, I have had doubts and become more skeptical each year. Why do people in a modern, sophisticated world cling to ancient superstitions and beliefs in the name of their religion?

The reason why people cling to religion today is because the world is really not that much more sophisticated, at least not culturally (technologically it is). People lack independance as individuals. Christianity is based on herd values and so Christians are unwilling to break from the fold. And since religion is so inbred into our culture it unlikely that something like science would ever change their view despite apparent contradictions.
