In New Zealand recently two female muslim witnesses in a court case asked the court to let them wear coverings and veil that cover every inch of their face and body except a tiny slit for their eyes so they can see. Their request was granted. One said she’d been veiled all her adult life and would rather commit suicide than show her face in the court. One lawyer in the case said that seeing a witnesses face is necessary so that the jury can judge their expressions and demeanour to help them assess if they are telling the truth. It disturbs me that such women are so hidden away that they are incapable of participating properly in the legal system. I can understand people believing in dressing modestly. But this is more extreme than dressing modestly, it’s making the person disappear altogether. I think it makes that person into a virtual prisoner. Why do some muslims go so far beyond just dressing modestly, and make it so that some muslim women have to disappear altogether?
