Why do women say you should never wear a thong on an airplane flight?

I have never heard that before. My only guess is that you could be very uncomfortable with it on for several hours, and no way to really fix it when there's a weird guy sitting next to you.

As a woman who has frequently flown on international flights, I would imagine it's just too uncomfortable. On the other hand, I wouldn't wear a thong at all, unless I knew it was going to come off almost immediately.

Coming from someone who wears thongs all the time, I am not quite sure what the difference would be if you were on a plane or not. Possibly because you are seated for a long period of time? But I've done it before and noticed nothing unusual.

This is probably totally irrational, but I'm not too keen on wearing thongs (or short skirts, for that matter) when I know I'm going to be seated on public furniture, particularly upholstered furniture. It's a hygiene issue for me. You literally don't know where that seat has been.
