The murder of Matthew Shepard received more attention because it is part of a trend of crimes against specifically targeted groups. It was/is especially topical because of all the debate about hate-crime legislation. While I did not follow this story closely, I assume this 13-year-old boy's brutal murder received the usual coverage, for acts of that level of violence are committed too frequently in the United States, whether by gays or straights, men or women, blacks, whites, etc. The sexuality of the murderers or victim was not the motivation for this crime, as it was in the Shepard case

This tragic outcome was not classifiable as a crime based on bias against a sexual orientation, so it could not be reported as one. A comparison would have to be made to instances wherein underage females were having sex with men, which happens too often.
