J. MasiulewiczParticipantDo men and women who wear their hair in a mullet hairstyle actually think it looks good? Do they not realize that most people, even here in the South, are making fun of them behind their short-in-front-long-in-back backs?

Ann L. LowensteinParticipantBeyond a doubt some are clueless. Others are probably trying desperately to hold onto their vanished youth by retaining the same hairstyle they had in high school. Still others may be like those 60-something women you see with the same ‘Patty Duke’ bouffant they sported in high school: They found a look they liked, and now they are too hidebound or afraid to change ‘after all these years.’ In a lot of cases, I bet if you investigated further, you’d find that all of those ‘mullet holdovers’ friends and relatives are also still sporting the same hairstyle (and probably the same clothes and car) as they had in high school, as well. There’s a woman where I work who has what is probably the same unflattering as hell ‘big hair’ hairstyle she had in grade school, as well as the most amazingly ugly pair of high-waisted, narrow-legged, cropped-at-the-ankle, purple acid washed jeans you can possibly imagine. She thinks she looks good in both. She’s wrong, but no one can convince her of this. Embracing change is not necessarily a common human characteristic, unfortunately.

AnnaParticipantAre these mullet wearers in their early 40s? I think what happens is that when someone is in their prime, like, say, their early 20s, (1986, if you do the math) they get a stylish haircut that looks good on them and then they just stick with it. For the rest of their life! As you get older it is harder to try new things and stylish new haircuts tend to look weird on you, at least in your own opinion. Although I don’t have a mullet, I have had the same haircut for 20 years because it is comfortable and I think it looks best on my head. Luckily for me, the hairdo I got stuck with is fairly classic. This is not a new phenomenon; I remember as a kid (say about 1976) seeing the old ladies (probably in their 40s!) who still had beehives and the men who still had ducktails and thinking, ‘They look so dorky, why don’t they just feather back their hair like Shaun Cassidy?’

Mike19690ParticipantI had a mullet in junior high and thought it looked good. Other kids did as well, but that was in the eighties. I still think the hairstyle is ridiculed too much. There are other hairstyles just as bad, if not worse.

Teresa19709ParticipantI just spent some time in Spain and noticed that mullets are quite popular among the young men. Muy feo (very ugly) is all I can say! In fact, gangs of boys who commit petty crimes, known as ‘canis,’ are known for their mullet hairstyle. A few older men have mullets too, but not many. I always thought Europeans prided themselves on good style–they should know better. Just showed me that American hillbillies aren’t the only ones.

GordonRMemberI think they’re hot. Really. A man in a mullet looks like he needs sex and if he does, he can just come to me.
