What is the exact meaning and particular origin of the term “motherf***er?” It seems so ingrained into the culture around me, and I’ve always wondered what it really means. Even my dad doesn’t seem to know. Does it mean “the mother of all f***ers,” or that the person has intercourse with their mother? Who coined this term, and when did it enter widespread usage? This is a very awkward question for me to ask, especially in regards to my personal morals and views on bad language. But this question has been bugging me since I was a young kid.

I always considered the term to be literal, i.e., someone so ‘bad’ that they would, well, you get the idea. Then I read somewhere that it derives from a Spanish term and refers instead to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, rather than one’s own mother. That alone makes it, in the judgement of this struggling Catholic, the most repugnant word in the English language.

I think it refers to a well-endowed or maybe well-skilled phallis.

Interesting question, Dan. I think that to get a good understanding of this issue, you need to examine works of literature such as Oedipus Rex. If you recall the story, Oedipus, who was abandoned at an early age, unknowingly murdered his father and married his mother. When he learned the truth, he blinded himself because his own image in a mirror was too horrible for him to accept. Nature, literature and religion all record the basic taboo of having sex with one’s mother. Even in the animal world, this taboo is never violated. Nature often retaliates such an act by creating an offspring of such a relationship who is either deformed, severely handicapped or stillborn. The utter degradation and sin of such an act is considered by virtually every culture on this planet as the most vulgar act any male can commit. Thus, when one calls another a motherf****r, the recipient of the curse has been called the lowest thing on earth. I think that is the origin and meaning of the curse.

The origin of the phrase is the worst thing you could expect of a ‘decent’ male. You donot **** your mother in most polite societies at least not openly.

The term ‘motherf$#@er’ was first coined by the famous pychologist Dr.Freud, although only in the form of an idea. Freud as you may or may not know had believed that all males were invariably attracted to their mothers on a sexual level. As Freud gained influence in North America, people caught on to this concept. This idea was then synthesized into the derogatory word that is now. So, yes motherf#$%er refers to having intercourse with one’s mother.
