While in college, I had a Jewish friend, who, when we attended a football game, for instance, occasionally would ask someone if he or she was an ‘M.O.T.’. He explained to me this meant ‘Member of Our Tribe’ and that if he asked, ‘Are you Jewish?’ he might offend someone. My question is: Why was this ‘secret code’ really necessary?
