Why are white males with long hair not taken seriously in business?

I have hair about a third of the way down my back, and have never received any comments from clients or those I come in contact with at client sites. I’m an IT consultant, and have found, in my experience, that brute competence has a tendancy to overshadow any other consideration. Clients want results, and I give results. I don’t think I’d care to work in an environment where how I looked (some specific mold I had to conform to) was more important than my performance. I’m well-groomed and dress to suit the client’s workplace (some companies, though fewer these days, are still tie and slacks; most are dockers and unbuttoned collars), and simply conduct myself in a very professional, confident manner. Why should anything else have an impact?
