I’m a 53-year old white man, very shy and constantly dealing with a lot of bad attitudes about other people that I picked up as a child. I rent a cottage by myself in a very quiet wealthy white suburb and don’t have many friends. If I were to move to a neighborhood that was mostly Latino or African American, I have a feeling that I would be identified in short order as someone who isn’t cool, is vulnerable to harassment and disrespect, and maybe even someone who could be roughed up and robbed as time passed and neighbors got to know me. For example, I’ve was accused of being a narc by some Latino guys in a pool hall once when such betrayal would have never entered my mind, but it scared the bejesus out of me. I was picked on a lot as a kid. But I believe that living successfully in the same area with people not from my background would be an enlightening experience.
