KevinMemberIs it just me, or does it seem like a disproportionate number of people with leg disabilities, like shortened or twisted legs and pronounced limps, are Asian? I’ve been in the San Francisco Bay Area all my life, where there are lots of Asians, and I never really see whites or blacks with such disabilities – Asians predominate. The handful of such people (like my ex-boss) I’ve personally known have been immigrants, as opposed to second- or later-generation Americans. Is it something about the way such injuries and/or birth defects are handled (or not) in countries like Taiwan and Vietnam (citing two examples from my personal experience)?

Chandra32231MemberI noticed that myself at the local shopping mall last night. There was an elderly Asian man missing his entire right arm and part of his shoulder. According to several magazine articles I read, there are many land mines that were left over from the Vietnam War that were never removed. Now they are being inadvertently ‘discovered’ by innocent people, adults and children, who often lose limbs when they accidently step on them.

Sam28542MemberAsian countries had more problems with diseases, especially polio, that can cause disfigurement. While in the US there is (and has been for a long time) a polio vaccine, Asian countries were not so lucky. It’s not so much a problem anymore, but I’m assuming you are talking about older Asians (not teens or people in their 20s) with disfigurement.
