I was wondering why the head stones in Jewish cemeteries seem so close together. The markers look almost ‘shoulder to shoulder’ as opposed to the relatively spacious spans of grass I have seen between grave markers in non-Jewish cemeteries. Also, what is the tradition of placing a small stone or pebble on top of the marker?
