To men who were involved in the practice of beating drums in the woods during the late ’80s: What was the purpose of this activity? From my understanding, it was a spiritual group that would gather and perform ceremonies focusing on healing wounds inflicted by women. Is that correct? And who and what type of men were involved in these groups?

I wasn’t banging on a drum in the 80’s, but I remember reading a review of the book that started it. After digging around on Amazon for a while, I found the name of the book that started all the drumming: Iron John, by Robert Bly. According to the review, the wounds that men were attempting to heal by performing tribal ceremonies like drumming were not caused by women, but fathers. In human culture up to the point of the industrial revolution, boys were raised by their fathers to be men. The combination of the industrial revolution taking much of father away from family rearing, plus the mothers’ lack of understanding of the ‘cultural’ requirements for raising boys, is what did the damage. Apparently the idea hasn’t died out — the book is still got an Amazon sales rank of 12,896!
