Johnny-AliveMemberI know that alcohol is forbidden and tobacco frowned upon in Islam, but I am curious about Muslims’ attitudes toward prescription drugs, especially psychiatric medication. Can devout Muslims take painkillers that might have a narcotic effect? Can they take psychiatric medications for depression or anxiety? Or is this dependent on the individual’s intentions?

BushraMemberIn Islam, alcohol is forbidden because it affects your brain and therefore prevents you from focusing on your daily activities. But there’s no problem whatsoever for Muslims to take medications against depression and anxiety, as long as you don’t reach the point where you get addicted. However, all sorts of drugs, such as heroin, are forbidden for the same reason as alcohol.

KarimMemberThere is no problem with using prescription drugs, as long as it is done under the supervision of a medical professional. Even if addiction is a risk, Islam teaches that sometimes we have to choose the better of two evils; if the alternative to taking the drug is ugly, then not taking it is almost sinful.

Richard-M-PopielarzMemberIf Xanax & other tranquilizers are OK, why don’t we color Xanax blue, say that it’s Viagra, then send it for bin-Laden to find? Then, when he and his cronies are calm enough, they can be sent to Gitmo for anger management classes. (Just some frustrated wishful thinking!!!)
