My neighbor and friend is african american, and we were discussing my recently planted flowers. 'They look great,' she said. 'Oh, I doubt they'll grow, I have a black thumb,' I said without even thinking about it (this is a common saying among whites meaning you can't grow anything.) Then she held up her thumb and said, 'Yeah, me too,' and walked home. She was fine with me afterwards, but I felt horrible. I surround my children with cultural diversity, we even moved to this neighborhood *SPECIFICALLY* because our children would grow up with Black, Indian, Jewish, Arab and other cultures. Did I offend her? Now I think this is a horrible saying and it won't pass my lips again.
