GMemberJust because this one black guy was ignorant how would that mean ‘or do blacks really feel that we hate them because of their skin color?’ This guy did not represent all blacks when he tried to sue you. Obviously he was just crazy. There are crazy people in all races.

LeroyMemberI, personally, do not feel that all white people hate me but I am cautious. There has been approximately 400 years of racial injustice in this country and to believe that it has all been wiped out in a span of 50 years or so is ridiculous. The only thing that forced attitudes to change is the law but that doesn’t mean that everyone will change their personal views. Another thing to think about is the KKK. Just because they aren’t as noticeable doesn’t mean they are gone. If they aren’t wearing their sheets in public that means they are hiding right in front of our faces and with the sudden move to want to reverse affirmative action it becomes harder to deny. In order to keep guard, we sort of have to overreact. Just in case.

MDParticipantJust be glad you don’t live in South Carolina! The guy probably would’ve beat you up (if not killed you) then sued you! In this state, black people can do things like you described, and it’s ok. If a white person does or says the same thing, it’s racism!

Steve27863ParticipantYes I believe racism is still prevalent, I’m mix and get it from both sides wether it’s white in-laws who hate me because I have some black in me or black people who treat me as the white oppressor because I have too much white in me. I believe there are a lot of blacks who feel hated by white people in general and I believe there are a lot of whites who really do hate black people. It’s also pretty typical for a person to take their feelings of discrimination in the past and let it taint their interactions in the present. Odds are he wasn’t crazy just has run into a lot of white people who wouldn’t treat him fairly in the past.

Cathy-Coyle32437ParticipantIt’s just an excuse to try to get some money the easy way and make a lot of noise over nothing, as taught by the likes of Jesse Jackson and his ilk. Just say no to the race-merchants and the extortionists. They make millions off dividing Americans. Calling a white person ‘racist’ is losing its impact because of the old Boy-Who-Cried-Wolf analogy.

VelMemberI don’t think there’s nearly as much true racism out there as there used to be. However, it is an awfully convenient excuse for anyone looking for a reason people don’t like them or an excuse for their own inadequacies.

ElijahParticipantI don’t think so but i also know that some people do because they usually HAVE had problems with other races in the past, and are still affected by it… so they feel as if everyone from the OTHER race is the same.

Ron29647ParticipantYES YES YES, I am a white male and live in the south and I am disgusted by the constant barrage of racism I hear every day. The ‘N’ word is used constantly by black and white folks. I feel like a minority within my own race and I am ashamed of my race and our country for its treatment of so-called minorities. We may wel have come a long way, but the road ahead is still beyond the horizon.

JillParticipantI think sometimes it does get a little out of hand. Last week police were contacted about 2 males walking around in a parking lot late at night so they went to check it out. The police officer asked the 2 men(around 19) to stop but they kept walking and ignored the officer. The officer drew his gun and searched them. One of the 2 men was white the other was black. The mother of the black male brought the police officer to court claiming racism(??!!) meanwhile the white male admitted he shouldve stopped walking and did what the police officer asked. Anyways the officer that stopped then turned out to be black and the case was dismissed because the officer felt threatened when the 2 men didnt comply with his demands so it gave him reason to react in the way he had to. I feel sometimes it does get a little out of hand and they feel they can use racial blames on us so easliy.

NatalieParticipantI believe this guy was either having a bad day and taking it out on you or just plain had a chip on his shoulder. Within your question, you’re actually stereotyping one race – by saying ‘do blacks really feel that we hate them because of their skin colour?’ This was ONE black person you served, not every single ‘black’ person on Earth. Don’t look at this experience as something that will now tarnish the way you look at different raced people. That costumer was one person..It’s like saying if you were racist, then every single other white person must be. I’d advise you not to worry about this incident. Forget it. It was just a bad costumer having a rough day. You did nothing wrong.

JessTsabParticipantIm a police officer and I had a black man call me racist because i gave him a ticket, twice, because he came thru my checkpoint two days in a row with the same problem. See, I work on a Naval Base, NBPD… and we have decals to get on our base. The first day he came in with fake decals (thats supposed to go to Federal Court for tampering with a govm’t document) and I gave him a bit of a break, I ‘stroked’ him on our base ticket instead of a federal one. The next day he did the same thing, no attempt to right his wrong, and I wrote him for federal. Do YOU think I was wrong? He told my partner (coinidentally a black man) that he couldnt wait to get out of VA bc there were so many racist people here. ?!? So maybe, maybe not, but I think the racism is going both ways. (He thinks I am racist bc Im white)

Adrian PetytParticipantYou’re kidding, right? Would there be any need for a forum like this one if people just got along? Yes there’s still racism. It was probably worse in my day I’m a decade older than you are, but I know the attitudes that my fellow whites expressed when I was at school haven’t vanished. Nor, I’m sorry to say has the awkwardness felt by more liberal whites, like myself, in discussing such things with black people, unless we’ve known them for years. That’s why the whole ‘lets discuss it in the anonymity of cyberspace’ idea occurred to the guys who run this site.

NateParticipantBlack female bank tellers in Detroit have refused to cash large checks from major financial institutions for my wife. Yes racism is absolutely prevalent. It’s part of our cultural landscape. Lets put it this way I know that I as a white guy can go pretty much anywhere in this country and sign into a hotel or get a seat at a restaurant. There are still places where I should actualy steer clear of for my personal well-being. Other ethnicitys don’t experiance such freedom of travel and are refused, hounded and harrassed in many places in this country. until our boundries are broken by intrepid souls willing to venture outside thier respective ghettos there will alway be racism. ‘Unfortunately’ not all of us feel free to pull out the race card when things don’t go our way.

teenagerParticipantI don’t think whites hate me i go to a predominantly white all girls school and it all depends on attitude. Think about the way you said it rather than what you said.

Rita30508ParticipantUnfortunately it is. It is set in my mind, that when something happens, I have to give it some thought. I work in the schools, and I’ve had several students make racial remarks to me. (elementary kids) Recently I had lunch with a collegue who is Caucasian. When the hostess sent us to a table in a seperate dining room, in the back that was closed, he got a taste of what we complain about everyday. There are times when ‘racism’ is used inappropriately, but it still exists.
