Why do Indian women wear a red dot on their foreheads?

I believe its just an extra piece of "makeup" if you will. I have noticed not only red but many other colored dots on their foreheads. Most of the woman like to wear makeup, jewelry, ear rings, different pieces in hair, rings, tattoo, etc. I've seen Indian women with heena on their hands. Heena and dots are not permanent like tattoos so they have choice to change them often.
