You got it! Denoting the race when the person is not white happens everywhere in the USA, especially in schools, hence the racist outcome of american society. Example, the first american to do whatever (orbit, cross the atlantic, to the moon,etc.) is taught unracially in schools when the person is white, but if he is from another race they will mention that he was a whatever-american; and if he was not the first they teach it as a highlight for his race, such as the first afro-american in space. As a screenwriter, don't contribute to this. Mention the race when it is strictly necessary for the understanding and general meaning of the script. You'll be doing something good for your country.
