While the island of Hispaniola is home to only two countries, Haiti (where French Creole is spoken) and the Dominican Republic, the label ‘Hispanic’ nonetheless seems to be widely used to describe many brown-skinned people who speak Spanish in the USA. Who created this term? Isn’t it somewhat presumptuous and inaccurate? How do people frequently called ‘Hispanic’ feel about this name being used to describe them?
