Does racism exist in the United States to the level shown by the film and news industries, or do they exaggerate it?

I see racism in this country everywhere I look. Certainly, there are many whom are not racists, but many more are. I do not believe that what you see on the news is exaggerated. It is most probably true and correct. It is an unfortunate situation and many hate it, but it does exist. I know quite a few people who are racists themselves. They never like to admit it, but often make racist remarks and think that all criminals must be African-American or Hispanic. When you call them on it, they always tell me that they are not racist and like everybody the same, judging them on their merit. I say if this were true, they would never have made the racist comments to begin with. I believe it is ‘kickback’ from their upbringing and the society in which they lived. Many times it is shaped merely on socioeconomic status. It is not exaggerated.
