Why is it called a hat trick when a player scores three goals in a game?

I don’t know the exact reason why a hat trick is called a hat trick, but it probably has something to do with the tradition of fans throwing their hats onto the ice when this happens. A hat trick is the only time it is legal to throw anything onto the ice during a hockey game.

It is my understanding that when hockey first became popular in the United States, a local hat store offered a promotion whereby any player who scored three goals in a game would receive a free hat. Hence the term “hat trick.”

The practice predates hockey entirely, and goes back to English cricket. My understanding is that when a bowler in a pro-am exhibition match in the mid-19th century successfully sent off three consecutive pro batsmen, the last of the batters was so impressed he gave his hat to the bowler. Since then the term has come to be applied to any sporting endeavor in which three repetitions is especially difficult and skillful.
