What do young people who listen to Hip Hop call themselves? I ask because some people who go to raves are refered to as ravers; gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youths call themselves queer, etc.; people who skateboard are sometimes called skaters. There are Goths, straight edgers, rednecks. What does the Hip Hop generation call themselves? Is there a different word for African-American youths than for white youths?

The key to hip-hop music is the fluidity of language, so the title of a hip-hop enthusiast will vary, especially depending on subculture. Some folks who enjoy the type of underground hip-hop that I do call themselves ‘backpack heads,’ referring to an aesthetic choice. ‘Heads’ is a somewhat dated expression that applies to most hip-hop subcultures. I call myself a fan.

First, I don’t think there is a term, and I am more actively involved in hip hop than my black friends who listen to rap/hip hop. Second, there is a distinction that few people know and is best described by the following quote that intellectual rapper KRS-ONE said: ‘Rap is something you do, Hip Hop is something you live.’ Rap is one wing of music like soul and R&B, but in my experience, after writing my junior theme, Hip Hop includes the music, various rapper clothing lines e.g. Roca-Wear (Jay Z), Johnny Blaze (Method Man), the various Hip Hop lines, handshakes, etc. They all are under the realm of Hip Hop.

Back to your question, there is no one term, but you could ask a kid, ‘Do you live the Hip Hop lifestyle?’ The term ‘Hip Hoppers’ isn’t ill enough to call it our own. I own more than 400 Hip Hop cds, have professionally deejayed and own many Hip Hop items e.g. dvds. Last, the greatest thing about Hip Hop in my experience is that no longer is there a response like, ‘You’re white and you listen to Hip Hop? What the f**k?’ This is because of the successful entrance of Eminem, eliminating the stigma of the days of Vanilla Ice, and there are certainly no different words for the culture between the races, in my opinon. Hip Hop is open to anyone from any racial and economic background.

Hmm.. I don’t know how to answer that question. I mean, what do we call people who listen to any kind of music? I didn’t know that there was a way to classify someone who listens to pop or rap. I mean, rappers are people that sing rap, not listen to it.

maybe some people call themselves ‘hip-hoppers’, but i’ve never heard of it. i listen to it sometimes, and grew up with it- there is no specific term for those who listen to it that is widely used, unlike so many other genres of music. as a side note, hip-hop artists are slowly losing thier impact and not coming up with many relevant things to say, so many people who may have been big fans at one time(such as myself) are turning to other forms of music to connect to.

Look their is no term for the blacks and whites who listen to hip hop it’s just hip hop music. we have no name that secludes us from a group we just have the music that secludes us from a group, but that honestly dosen’t mean anything. Honestly, thats all it is, we are just listeners no name. In my opinion our name is nothing but music. I don’t know if we might have a name that I might not know of but right now I believe there is no name for us at this point.
