When Halle Berry won, I thought it was a good thing. But aren't the oscars for talent? When we start awarding people based on the oppression their culture endured, somethings wrong. Let's focus on the person's accomplishments and not their color.

The one-drop rule was outruled in the 60's...and why should someone try and pretend to be something they're not. I was raised to be brown, mixed or coloured not black or white. I have so many different cultures in me, why should I choose one over the other? You said that the words 'mulatto' and 'octoroon' were created to divide blacks, but if you think about it, they aren't even black at all. Society may label mixed people as black, but I think it's important to know who you are. You might think I'm ignorant, uneducated or even 'mixed up,' because of where I'm from or because of my age, but I assure you that's truly not the case! I know what I am and who I am, regardless of what anyone says.

Not trying to attack your statement, but why do you consider 'black' to be negative? That is your color. When i say that so and so white person, it's not negative the same goes when I say that so and so black person. That describes a persons color. If you want to describe ethnic backround then it wouldn't be acceptable.

What are you talking about/ 90% of blacks inthe USA are mixed with somethig else so are they less black? and Halle Berry looks more black than white so if she said she was mixed or was white she would not be accepted by white society. Furthermore the term mulatto is offensive because The Spaniards made a deal with the Portuguese to trade African with them for precious stones because the native slaves were dying out on them. So when the Spainards saw African women with biracial children they called them 'mulattoes' meaning in old spanish a mule because a mule is a mix of a donkey and a horse so dont call mixed people mulattoes because thats offensive and insulting. Could you imagine someone calling you a mule?

You are steriotyping just as much as the people who offend you by doing it. I am called 'white', and that offends me as much as 'black' offends you. No one should be catagorized by their color. I check the other box because I am of many ethnicities even if they are almost all 'white' ethnicities. I never chose to be catagorized or to catagorize. In saying that all 'whites' want catagories, you are doing the very thing you are trying to avoid! Don't generalize.

Ed S, you need to get a life and stop worrying about what African Americans choose to call themselves. I am an African American woman...a Black American of African descent. What I, and other AA's choose to call ourselves is NO concern of yours.

Just who are you to tell black people to 'get over' anything? For your information, I am an African American .. an American black of African descent. I expect to be referred to as such. I really think white people dangerously cross the line when it comes to telling us what we can and cannot call ourselves. You really need to mind your own damn business.
