It’s unusual to see a very hairy guy. The general impression is that it appears ‘ape’-like. This gives the appearance a bad connotation. I can remember as a grade schooler seeing a man in a swimming pool with hair on his shoulders and back and just being totally amazed that this was possible. I have seen it very infrequently to date (I’m now almost 50). So maybe it’s just different, and therefore undesirable in many women’s eyes.

I used to think chest hair was kind of gross on a man until I met my fiance. He has quite a bit. I can’t figure out what the big deal is anymore either, because I love that he has chest hair and can’t imagine him without it. I think it’s mostly a matter of personal preference, but I also think some girls just haven’t experienced a man with hair, because it seems like it comes a little bit later in life. To me, it seems like younger women don’t like chest hair.

Women find excessively hairy arms and backs disgusting for the same reason men find hairy legs or armpits on a woman disgusting.

A possible answer ignoring social and cultural biases and norms… Body hair growth is in part stimulated by the presence of testosterone. Naturally, men prefer women who are high in estrogen – low in testosterone. These women are likely to be more fertile than one who is more hirsuit possibly as a result of a high testosterone presense.

I dated an East Indian man. East Indians are characteristically hairy (especially those from the south of India) and my sweetie was no exception. It was my first time being confronted with so much body hair and I loved it (after I got over the initial shock)! There’s something wonderful about being curled up in the arms of a hairy man on a cold winter’s night.

Most men that like women don’t like body hair (legs and armpits generally) on them, but then some of them (not necessarily you) get bent out of shape that a woman could find their ten-times-as-much body hair unattractive. This makes no sense to me. The hair doesn’t feel nice when you touch it, it makes you smell sweaty, and it makes you look like the step before modern human in a evolution diagram. Smooth skin feels good. I think any body hair more than a bit you can barely feel and see, on men or women, is unattractive; some people like it though. Pubic hair is the exception because without it, you look infantile or like a plucked bird. Not to mention the fact that stubble is painful and scratchy to touch, as in a cactus-underwear feeling. So keep it short and don’t shave it. Men shave your armpits.

I would not reject a guy because he was hairy, but I prefer hairless guys. My boyfriend is hairy and I adore him, but (not to be graphic) when I attempt to lick his body, his hair sheds in my mouth. It takes forever to remove those tiny, fine hairs when they stick to the back of the roof of your mouth. I’d never tell him this though.
