I do not understand how arm hair on females became such an evil enemy. It's such a beautiful physical feature. I think the hair removal and cosmetic companies just wanted to expand their market to make more money, and they targeted this for pure profit. It's too bad. The completely bald female arm, now THAT looks unnatural and disgusting. What do others think?

It's like armpit hair, most of the world has more important things to worry about than a little extraneous female hair. North Americans are obsessed with it, probably because we're quite inhibited and self-conscious about our bodies and their functions (compared to many Europeans for example). Also, yes, there's a lot of money to be made selling hair-removal-related products. I think most men don't really care about it much, though I get a little turned off if it's as lush as mine... I've never heard anyone suggest it's a 'deal-breaker' on an otherwise attractive woman though.

I think the whole hairless women thing came about because the beauty standard for women places such an emphasis on looking young. The youngest members of the female sex have virtually no body hair, so there you go. Of course, I think this is slightly insane and kind of gross, since the youngest members of the female sex are also children. I've got to say, I'm glad it's not a conscious preference. I imagine it's a hold-over from when it was not uncommon for 30-year-old men to marry teenage women. Either way, I don't like this obsession with hair removal, either.

In response to your question, I don't think it's a cosmetic industrial conspiracy (after all, razors are cheap), rather, it's a cultural difference. In the vast majority of cultures from all over the planet, the question of attractiveness in regards to sexual differences is often one of magnification. For example, women in general have smaller feet than men. In China, this became footbinding (I realize that it was also a male dominance thing, but it was of beauty as well. . .one need only examine the history of the Ming to Qing era to see the problem men had accepting non-footbound feet. . .they were considered hideous.) Other examples include the tribespeople in Thailand with neckrings to make their necks appear longer because women also typically have longer, slimmer necks. Victorian era women emphasized the thinness of torso to hips through painful and dangerous corsetts. There are many more examples if you care to study the cultural anthropology. Here in the US, because women are typically less hairy than men, we find hairless women the typical beauty standard--hair on lips, hairy legs, hairy underarms. I have to admit that I'm a part of this preference, and I know it shouldn't matter if a girl's got hair on her lip or not but it does.

I suppose it's not any hair that is the problem for me so much as the type of hair. I'd prefer a woman's arm hair to be thin, soft, and light colored if possible (or a color that does not stand out against thier skin). *No* arm hair would be a bit weird to me. Frankly, I prefer my own hair to be that way. I'm a pale ass Irish guy. In the winter my skin is white and my hair is black. Not the best combination. In the summer if I get a little sun (not enough to burst into flames, gotta be careful...) my hair gets lighter and blends in more with my skin (which is a *little* tan). I just think it looks better. Maybe the media made me think that. Who knows? It's what I prefer though.

Only want hair in 2 places on my females. Hint: Arms and legs are NOT included on the admittedly short list.

I have really hairy arms. It sucks because society makes me feel like it is a 'manly' trait. However, all the women in my family have hairy arms. I hate being made to feel ashamed, and I would love to know if it really does bother men, or if it is just something that the hair removal industry wants me to think.

I'm glad somebody appreciates the natural look! I can't tell you why folks in the US expect adult women to be as hairless as infants, but as a female with noticable body hair, I know there's a lot of social pressure to do everything and anything to get rid of it. The pressure comes from both men and other women, including people whom you would hope would know better. On two separate occasions now I've had medical professionals offer me the unsolicited advice to look into hormone therapy to 'correct' my 'problem.' Talk about making someone feel like a freak!

It's just a fad. Back in the 70's we were all hairy and now smooth is in (for both man and women). To me is a bit creepy.

I'm turned off by female armpit hair. The reason that I find it masculine is cultural upbringing. I could fashion my head hair into pigtails. But I doubt that would turn you on. In many cultures it's the women who put on makeup. But among the Nuba in Sudan, it's the man. Same goes with many New Guinean peoples.

Females with little hair have been admired before the concept of 'cosmetic company' was invented. Removal of pubic* hair was considered the norm for women in ancient Egypt's aristocracy. The equivalent of 'cosmetic companies' were slaves, who really couldn't be blamed like you do, could they? Your theory has been falsified. Grovel. =) The reason for preferring females with little hair has everything to do with the level of estrogen. Hirsutism (male-like hair) indicates excessive testosterone, which ultimately leads to irritability, instability and poor fertility in females. The same reason goes for preferring blondes: the blondiness of hair actually correlates with the level of estrogen. The trend* to systematically remove pubic (and genital) hair has resurfaced, but this is not the invention of 'companies'. Nude photo-, and pornography is usually credited. I'd point at the general increase of sexual freedom. Those who wanted to remove pubic hair at earlier ages weren't aware of the possibility, couldn't do it, were forced not to, feared of being frowned upon etc. and didn't do so. Now it's possible. * pubic = appearing at puberty. * trend = a pattern that can be noticed over a long period of time, i.e. more than ten years

It's great to know that all men don't think it's unnatral! I have no clue why hair became such an offensive thing. Why shave the legs and not the arms? Great question. I have no clue.

If your arm hair is thicker than mine it might be an issue.

i have somewhat hairy arms and for mos to f my life i was comfortable withthis trait. however within the past two years i have become quite selfconscious about it... i too wish that it was something that was not shunned because i think that it is so not a big deal, however i hate it when people stare...
