Gays and the Arts

Why does it seem that so many gay males are involved in theater, dance or the arts? When younger, I always believed this was a horrible stereotype, which I still essentially believe. But I have always been into theater and dance, and since I was 13, I have known I was gay. Are homosexuals attracted to this field, or does this field attract homosexuals? I know the majority of homosexuals work in other fields; I am just wondering why so many are into ‘the arts.’

What’s horrible about talented gay people being highly visible in the arts? I think that’s great. Success in the arts is very hard to come by. That many gay people succeed is a testimony to their talent, persistence, endurance and guts. Who wouldn’t want a career in theater instead of accounting? Or to be a world-famous dancer instead of an anonymous engineer? Who wouldn’t want the excitement of performing to cheering crowds instead of a dull, nine-to-five job in front of a computer? This ‘stereotype’ of gays arises from one simple thing: the pure, unadulterated envy of the untalented.
