Whether it’s true or not, as a heterosexual I would have to say that my belief of gay men’s promiscuity (I’ve never been led to believe that lesbians are the same) was formed by media and different information in classes in high school and college. I’m sure AIDS has a lot to do with it. After all, it would seem if gay men weren’t as promiscuous, AIDS wouldn’t have spread as quickly. Also, I can even remember stories about public baths and ‘meeting places.’ I think just a bigger deal is made out of such activities of gay men so it’s just more ‘out there’ in the media, giving us the perception that gay men are the only ones doing this kind of stuff. On a personal note, when I was in college and had gay, lesbian and heterosexual friends, I have to say that the gay men were indeed more promiscuous, having more partners, and more frequently.

Thank you for responding as you have. As an HIV Prevention educator, I agree. The fact is, HIV is more prevelant amoung Heterosexuals. We here more about it amoung Homosexuals because the gay movement has been at the forefront of making sure HIV issues are adressed. They have put themselves in the media to draw attention to the disease. We owe gratitude to our gay friends. As for promiscuity… gays have never had the rights aforded to straights. Therefore, as a self discovering homosexual, historically there have been no place except for bars, parks and other dark places to meet other gays. Think about it… if you thought you were gay in the 80’s or earlier, where would you go to meet other gays who identify with you. O.K. Since there were no healthy places to meet, and society said it was a bad thing to be, low-self-esteem created barriers to healthy relationships. Therefore, relationships do not lost long. The same is true today. Solution… Create Safe / Healthy environments for people to talk about their differences. This fosters a healthy self-esteem, which leads to healthier relationships, and less promiscuity. Caution… This is true for gays and straights alike. Mental Health and Physical Health go hand in hand. It is nearly impossible to add unhealthy substances and maintain these two ‘healths’ at the same time. Oh, I almost forgot… most of my HIV clients are heterosexual. Both the men and women share their experiences with multiple partners, some of them in the triple didgets… Please, play safe!

Of course some gay men are promiscuous. But only a couple of years ago a well-known male baskeball player claimed to have had sex with tens of thousands of women. Generalizing about straight men from that basketball player’s boast would be about as accurate as generalizing from sensational news reports about gay men. The news people make a living by spreading sensational reports, not by spreading the word that most gay men prefer to settle down with someone special. Certainly the gay men I know want just that. But remember, when gay men do settle down, society does its best to place as many hurdles in the way as possible. For how many years has straight society told gay men that we are constitutionally unable to build a long-term relationship? And yet when we try, governments and churches make our lives as hard as possible. This notion of gay men willing to have sex with any man who’s breathing is one of straight men’s most self-satisfying fantasies. Lots of straight men – no matter how ugly, stupid or vulgar – like to think that any gay man desires nothing more than to seduce them. In fact, gay men are at least as choosy as straight men. And most straight men need have no fear of being desired by any gay man.
