Most feminists support the right of a woman to have an abortion on demand, and some even believe that abortion is a good thing. However, it seems that when many of them are confronted with real and proven evidence of negative physical, mental and emotional effects of abortion on women, they downplay the information and do not allow it to factor into their opinion on the subject. If the stated goal of feminism is to protect and advance women, this seems like a disservice. Are they afraid to admit that abortion may not be the safe and easy solution that they portray it as? Admitting problems with abortion would certainly remove a large part of their agenda and dissenters run the risk of being branded as traitors. I am basing the assumptions in this question on years of print and TV information that show that most women who identify with the feminist movement are reluctant to criticize abortion, even though it does hurt women.
