Every time I see a woman in traditional Islamic dress, I wonder why female genital circumcision is practiced in some cultures. What purpose could it serve? Do many Muslim sects condone this practice? What do Muslims in America think of it?

The practice of female circumcision is not an Islamic one. It is an African tribal custom. There was a report today (7/20/99) of an African woman named Adelaide Abakawah being considered for asylum in the United States, and she, apparently, is a Christian. I have spoken to some people from Africa, and they admit the practice still goes on there. Over here? I have no idea, but I have asked South Asian people from the Indian subcontinent, Indonesia and Malaysia, as well those of Arab descent, and they tell me that they would never dream of subjecting their women to such torture.

The purpose of female circumcision is to enhance the pleasure for the male by making the twat tighter. This practice has also been designed to make sex unenjoyable for the women. It might possibly be designed to prevent women from cheating on their husbands. Afterall sex has become torture and unless the woman is a masochist to the extreme it is unlikely that she will seek it out. What I find strange is that while the sex would be more enjoyable in one sense, it would also take away from the enjoyment. If the woman is willing and actually enjoyed sex, it would seem to me that the sex would be more enjoyable.
