When I look in history books at pictures of Arab Muslim people, I see a rough gender parity of dress. Both sexes wear loose, concealing clothing; women conceal themselves with scarves/veils, and men conceal themselves with headdresses and beards. When I see pictures of contemporary street scenes from Muslim countries, I notice a pronounced difference in gender clothing. Women are expected (or forced) to wear traditional type clothing, but most of the men are in clothing that is completely western in style. To my non – Muslim eyes, it looks like the men have given themselves the improvements of modern life, but are denying those improvements to the women. Is there another explanation? If modesty is so important in Muslim culture, why aren’t men expected to be as modest as women?
