I feel painfully shy and lonesome for people of other races. The vast majority of my friends and family are white. My brother-in-law is of Indian background, and one close friend is from China. Aside from that…. I know people through work and it is not unfair to say that I love some of them. But to have a deeply personal conversation with a black man– that has rarely happened since my friend Augustus died 40 years ago. When I talk to someone of another race, I am afraid I will say the wrong thing and I clam up. I have so many questions to ask and so much homesickness that I am afraid it will just well up and overwhelm the other, or me. So I wonder– Are there people on the other side of the racial divides who yearn as much as I do for this contact?
