I just watched a talk show on racism and, as usual, it was framed in terms of black and white and slavery. Why is this? If we want to speak of oppression and downright brutal history, why not talk about how this country systematically stole America from its indigenous population and killed millions of them in the process as well? Why not speak of people with disabilities? They still get thrown into institutions because it is assumed that they cannot contribute to society. It smacks of segregation! What do black people have to say about this? To me, all the talk of the importance of slavery implies that their pain is more important than everyone elses and I think that this is not neccessarily the case. There are still sheltered workshops in the U.S. that are, in fact, modern day equivalents of slave labor. I believe that anyone who has ever been oppressed or knows our history can offer insight into these issues in ways I can’t.
