Teresa19791ParticipantWhy do some people seem to think that because I’m blonde and American that I don’t understand a language other than English?

Marie26755ParticipantYour question begs another question. Why would you ask why people treat you a certain way because of your hair colour in the category which deals with race and ethnicity. Do you consider your blondness a race or ethnic orientation?

Ann L. LowensteinParticipantYou are being stung by what we refer to as a ‘stereotype’, dear. Blonde American women have been stereotyped as hypersexual morons for decades, and a lot of people IN the U.S. (much less in other countries) buy so completely into the stereotype that they couldn’t see past it even if you smacked them between the eyes with a board. Unfortunately, unless you move to Scandinavia or Germany, you will continue to run into this until you go grey, I’m afraid. Your best course of action is to ignore where possible, humiliate where necessary; and if you discover you’re being screwed over at work because of your gender and hair color, pursue it to the fullest possible extent of the law.

FreedaBeeParticipantMaybe because you’re young, blonde, white and live in the mid-West in America. Most Americans who were born here and whos parents were bron here don’t speak or understand any language other than American English. Why should we? The rest of the world already speaks English so why bother? If you were dark-skinned or there was something else about your appearance that didn’t look corn-fed, people might not make that assumption. Likewise, if you lived in a state like California where English is spoken by a minority of the people, people might assume you speak Spanish or Tagolog or Vietnamese like everyone else here. Finally, what does understanding another language have to do with being dumb? I don’t get the connection between intelligence and being multi-lingual. There are absolute geniuses in the world who speak and understand only the language of their native country, while George W. Bush is fluent in Spanish. ‘Nuff said!
