Why do an amazingly large number of blacks keep their car windows open in the heat of the summer, despite the fact that many have new cars that would definitely have air-conditioning?

I always drive with my windows open in the summer. I love the outside air, the wind in my hair, all that good stuff. Isn't the freedom of the open road what it's all about? I always wondered why no one drives with their windows open, especially when it's 70 degrees in March or something like that. Maybe people are afraid of messing up their hair or they feel unsafe (like someone is going to carjack their Camry).

Driving around with the windows rolled down is more efficient and guzzles less gas. My vehicle burns more gas when the air conditioner is running.

Using the air-conditioner makes your vehicle burn more fuel ... have you seen gas prices lately?

Probably for the same reason that I tend to use the 240 method (2 windows down, 40 mph). Although I have a late-model car, I do not have money to throw away, and running the air-conditioning constantly is an expense I'd rather do without. I'd rather use the money I save on gas on something else, especially with gas prices being so high nowadays.

I do it because I'm thrifty, and car air conditioning uses up too much gas!

Well, if I have the window oepn, my hair whips all around my face. I can't see and it's annoying and uncomfortable. Even when I pull my hair back in a ponytail, sometimes I get flyaways and such that get in my eyes. But otherwise, I love the feeling of it =)

High gas pricies aside, plainly put, black people have a higher tolerance for heat (and consequently a lower tolerance for cold) than whites. It's the same answer to 'why in the world to whites go out in 40-50 degree weather with t-shirts and shorts on?' I can't stand AC, I freeze all through the fall, winter and spring (in Chicago, fall and spring are just early and late winter) just waiting for some heat, and when it finally arrives, I'm refrigerated in every public building I enter. So no, I don't use AC in my car or anywhere else if I can help it, not until temperatures get in the 90's, then it's too hot.

One, it saves on gas, and two, it smells better. I always find the air that comes from the air-conditioning kind of stale.

Ever think its not a race thing? Maybe a personal preference? Just a way to save gas? Read your car's manual it will tell you the samme thing..

I usually ride around with my car windows (or windas, in Alabama) down during the summer to preserve gas. I've noticed a lot of young black males 'round here have tinted windows. I wonder if this arouses more suspicion from the police.

Fact: A/C uses 2% more fuel than with the A/C off. Rolling down the windows will increase the force necessary to move your car forward. If you are asking why Blacks tip the back of the seat WAAAAY back, roll down the windows, turn on the music so loud it can be heard in the next county and act like you are invading their space by looking their way.....it's a black thing.

First, check the latest studies. Windows down actually creates more drag and ultimately uses more gas! Fact. I drive with my windows down because I like the fresh air. Plain and simple.

Windows are there to be opened. I like fresh air. Where I am from, lots of Caucasians have thier windows down also, until I pull up next to them. Then they role them up, as if I am going to reach in and rub off or something.
