I am a middle-aged, white male university instructor. I interact professionally with students of many cultural/linguistic backgrounds. I sometimes have difficulty conversing with black (North American) males. I have broken through many linguistic barriers in my life, and I feel at times that some of these young men are choosing to be difficult to connect with linguistically. Am I wrong, and how might I approach this difficulty?
