Why do black people, particularly religious black people, who were given religion through slavery to control them, use religion as a weapon or tool to discriminate gays and lesbians? I know religious people that have thrown their 12, 13 and 14 year old children out into the streets because of their sexuality and its conflict with their religion. My question is, how can a pesecuted people, who clearly still suffer the wrongs of discrimination, turn into persecutors and discriminators themselves, validating it through the very same religions that were used to discrimnate them and enslave them? How can black people see so clearly, the ravages of discrimination and prejudice, and inflict that very same prejudice and discrimination on anyone, even their own children and family?

The void purposefully created by slavery gives us very little history or culture except for our american experience and christianity is part of that experience and is one of the ways to fit in and is used as a tool to create equality. there is a reason why ministers have been at the forefront of civil rights. as a moral issue oppression against blacks is against the religion they share with whites. it's using that common ground against white people that has worked for us. unfortunately the bible as far as we know it or interpret it prohibits homosexual acts. blacks can not use religion to fight thier own oppression if they disregard it for homosexuals. Religion is the tool to black freedom religion is against homosexuals. Homosexuals can not win in a competition against freedom.

I'm guessing it's because they consider homosexuality to be a choice, not an integral part of how God made the homosexual. And because they believe this, they can tell themselves that they're fighting immoral BEHAVIOR as opposed to discriminating and being needlessly cruel. They can tell themselves that THEIR actions are different because their ancestors didn't CHOOSE to be black. They are able to delude themselves into believing that God hates gays and so should they.

Older black people (more religious by definition) do not like to hear young gays, even young black gays, compare the struggle for marriage equality to the Civil Rights struggle. The opponents of this ridiculous Prop 8 we have in California screwed up by holding rallies in WeHo, Hollywood and Silver Lake (traditionally supportive communities) and totally ignored Gateway, Koreatown, Watts and such (areas where lower income blacks and immigrants live). They preached to the choir and got blindsided by the congregation. It's been stunning to realize how homophobic some groups in this state are. Even more unbelievable if you look at who's paying the lion's share of the taxes and who's receiving the most tax funded services. The well educated, high earning gays and lesbians are paying the bills for all these lower income, uneducated people who just slammed them at the polls.
