It seems that most Black women straighten their hair. Why do they do this? Are they trying to look like non-Black women? Are they ashamed of their hair the way it naturally is?

on an individual basis no but culturally yes there is an aspect of trying to fit into white society. good hair and bad hair has a lot to do with what is more like white hair. and yet at the same time there is a real aspect of management still geared toward white ideals but only insofar as western beauty is white with orderly shiny hair being ideal beauty.
