    Bi-Polar disorder used to be called Manic-Depressive disorder, which is a much better name because it gives you an idea what your symptoms might be. People with Bi-Polar disorder swing between a state of extremely high energy, excitement, drive, enthusiasm and optimism; and a state of extreme low energy, disillusionment, unhappiness, unenthusiasm and pessimism; sometimes in the same day. When they are at the extreme of either cycle, they are also frequently paranoid and/or delusional as well. Bi-Polars don't have the usual checks and balances which allow people to absorb the blows and disappointments life throws at them, and a Manic-phase Bi-Polar can snap into a Depressive downward spiral from something as trivial as misplacing a pair of reading glasses.
