To Muslim women living in the United States: Do you feel less liberated than other women around you who are not confined by having to cover their hair? And what is the purpose of that in your religion?

Muslim women are not confined to sport the latest haircut, Muslim women are not confined to wear the latest fashion, and Muslim women are not confined to weight as some non-Muslim females may be. In Islam, women do not worry about who wears what. We are protected by the scarfs we choose to wear, which is a commandment from God, Most High. Muslim women are respected for their minds, not disrespected because of their weight. Islam is freeing.

The purpose of wearing a scarf and covering our bodies is to prevent social death through sexual perversion. What I mean is that covering allows us to 1) be respected as women, 2) be respected as individuals and 3) not be treated like sexual objects. The covering prevents men from lusting after women they don’t have a relationship, and for women to be dignified and modest. I feel more liberated than the other women around me because I am not pressured to be “beautiful” for society. I’m beautiful the way I am; I am treated like an individual, not like a sexual object that people play around with.
