SoniaMemberThe problem with name-brand products is the price! Parents are forced to pay three times the price of an identical un-branded product just so their kids can walk around as unpaid advertisements with brand names stitched across their chests. As a parent, I value the individuality of my daughter and would prefer her to dress in clothes she genuinely likes, rather than the ones deemed necessary to have by others.

Hazel21438MemberTo me it means they are surrendering their individuality to the herd. Read a book called No Logo by Naomi Klein. She talks about corporations desiring to ‘brand’ you – getting you to wear their brand as if you were a cow owned by the company. I want clothes that fit and that don’t turn me into a billboard. Also, I don’t want these transnational companies using cheap foreign labor to create huge profits for their shareholders. I want much of the price of clothes to go to the workers who made them.

Charlene32238MemberI feel that parents are not only frustrated with the cost of namebrand items but would rather their children be more aware of their own individuality instead of desiring to be a clone of their peers. Also good parents try to teach our next generations good morals and values in regards to people as well as with money.

R.B. BookwalterMemberOne of the important roles of a parent is to teach our children good judgment. How will our kids, who are approaching adulthood, learn to handle their own finances if they let peer pressure convince them that $30 jeans are no good because they aren’t $75 Tommy Hilfiger jeans. We know that our kids are not going to be able to live a $100,000 lifestyle until they start earning $100,000. And that won’t be for a long time to come. They’d better learn to make wiser choices with my money before they have to start living on their own.

CeciliaMemberMaking a consumer choice based purely on name brand rather than on quality is materialistic and ignorant. No parent wants a child to learn to value things for their price tags rather than what really makes a difference, because that lesson tends to drift into other areas of life, like (worst case scenario) a poor choice of spouses and therefore a miserable ‘ever after’ just because of a flashy car, fat paycheck or a future inheritance. Don’t fool yourself. Regardless of whether they’re right or wrong, parents only want what’s best for their kids. Name brand companies only want the kids’ cash. As much of it as they can get.

OzzieMemberAcutaly, my parents, father in particular, find it better to buy name-brand products for most things. Underwear and such doesnt fall under this categorey. It depends where you shop. I really like T.J.Maxx and simmilar stores because they sell name brand clothes for the same price as wal-mart attire. I get my shoes a Marshalls. All the expensive kins are there for $20-$30. The good thing about name-brand clothes is that they do not wear out as quickly. In elementary school, I used to get shoes from PayLess. I had to get a new pair almost every 6-7 months. Now, I wear them for well over 2 years.
