Why going barefoot is a taboo? Is that the reason people wear shoes inside the home? What are the places you can go barefoot without frowning the people? e.g in your backyard?, on the beach?

I personally find it painful to walk on a hard surface without shoes for very long. This is why I wear shoes at home.

I go barefoot almost everywhere that isn't a "public area" ('public' being grocery/stores, movies, cafes, work, etc) and nobody has ever said anything to me. Depending on where you're at, even some public places accept nekkid feet without the convenience stores around the lake, outdoor eateries, etc. I suggest that as a rule of thumb - for politness sake, if you (or any average guy) wouldn't go there without a shirt, don't go there without shoes.
