Why going barefoot is a taboo? Is that the reason people wear shoes inside the home? What are the places you can go barefoot without frowning the people? e.g in your backyard?, on the beach?

I personally find it painful to walk on a hard surface without shoes for very long. This is why I wear shoes at home.

I go barefoot almost everywhere that isn't a "public area" ('public' being grocery/stores, movies, cafes, work, etc) and nobody has ever said anything to me. Depending on where you're at, even some public places accept nekkid feet without comment...like the convenience stores around the lake, outdoor eateries, etc. I suggest that as a rule of thumb - for politness sake, if you (or any average guy) wouldn't go there without a shirt, don't go there without shoes.
