Aaron L.ParticipantI always hear that the French are rude to Americans when we visit their country. Why? I makes me not ever want to visit.

N.A.ParticipantLast October I went to Paris, and I found the people (clerks, hotel staff, etc.) to be helpful and patient. Maybe you just have to go to the right places! I can imagine though that in a city like Paris with so many American tourists, the people can get annoyed. I’d be annoyed too if foreigners visited my city and expected me to speak their funny language.

SadhbhDCMemberThe French can come accross as a bit abrupt and American tourists to many countries tend to rub people up the wrong way. People will not respect you unless you; make some effort to speak French, sample local food and customs etc., try not to look like tourists or wear your nationality on your sleeve and don’t disrupt the natural rythym of things.

GuyGuyersonMemberI have a French friend. He says French people think it is phony to act all happy and friendly when they are at work, where they don’t really want to be. Last trip here he commented that a girl smiled at him passing on the sidewalk…said in France only a prostitute would smile at a stranger. I noticed that he was much more ‘Frank’ in his conversation, not really into being tactful. Fine with me as long as I get to act that way too.

georgewMembermost everyone dislikes tourists, not just france. i live in nw florida and a lot of people blame the tourists for the traffic jams, condos, strip malls and everything else under the sun. most of us are tourists at one time or another.
