Are implants like dentures in the U.S.?

In Europe, breast implants are still largely weird, a thing porn actresses do for the money. There are various gory stories circulating about side-effects (ranging from vague discomfort to sudden death), as well as jokes about the 'stupid bimbos' in fashion and media doing such things to themselves. And I have heard males complain about the yucky feeling of 'hard-as-tennis balls' breasts. At the same time, everyone here knows that breast implants have become very common in the United States. What are male and female views on that from Americans? Do you consider silicone ordinary by now (like dentures in old people) or is it still something odd?

I wouldn't even classify breast implants as weird; I think they're unsafe and, for the most part, unattractive. I'm a nudist, so I've seen many women with them, and usually they're easy to spot: High, firm breasts that never move or sag. I've seen some that look terrible, like huge basketballs, and some that don't look bad at all. But I think that primarily, it's an unsafe practice, putting a foreign object in a woman's body for aesthetic reasons. I don't know if they are hard as tennis balls because I've never felt any.

They are definitely freaky, in an 'ewww' kind of way. For starters, there is the disturbing nature of the implant itself (often they leak, and there have been several monstrous class-action lawsuits). I'm not sure if implants are done because it is perceived it will help a woman's career (in Hollywood that may well be the case), or if it's an attempt to be more attractive to men. It would seem to reveal a tendency to want men to notice just one's body, not personality, if done for that reason. I would be very wary about getting involved with someone who felt a need to get them, as it would seem to me to reveal a fairly shallow, misguided person seeking something besides true love. At the same time, I do feel for women who feel pressured by society to measure up to an impossible Barbie ideal and hope they find a better way to feel good about themselves.

There's a peculiarly American myth - probably based on the models in Playboy - that all men prefer women with large breasts. Women seem not to understand that the models in Playboy represent Hugh Hefner's ideal, not that of all men. To the extent they care at all, maybe 50 percent of men would prefer smaller breasts, but confessing that in American culture is akin to confessing that one isn't crazy about elk hunting or football, either. I know for a fact that many men find implants a real sexual turn-off, yet American women seem oblivious to this. However, if a woman has her heart set on finding a man with an obsession for large breasts, then she might consider getting implants.

I think you are generalizing from TV and all the reality TV shows with 'normal people' - which take place largely in Los Angeles. Many of these are actress wannabe's, and even if they aren't, the culture of a movie industry town, including the porno industry, has influenced them. Maybe the 'strip club' set, and those in Florida also follow this, but for most Americans, they are weird, too.

Whether implants are considered 'normal' and encountered on a daily basis depends on where in America you live. I am in Maryland, and there are very few women here with fake breasts in comparison to the numbers I see when I go to Miami. I always leave there feeling very flat-chested because huge numbers of women there have had the surgery. It can easily brainwash you into thinking it's a normal look. After I step off the plane at home, though, I remember: that's a fantasyland of gorgeous women and not representative of the average American woman. Quite a few women in Southern California have them, too (and a few in New York, but not as many as Miami and So Cal). How is it in Europe? (Of course, the stereotypes we have of European women would lead us to conclude that all women in Europe have big breasts to begin with!

I do not consider them as weird now. Being rich, it is not uncommon for one of my affluent friends who is a girl to go home for Christmas and return with a new set of knockers. I have seen some that look bad on girls at the beach, but the bottom line is you get what you pay for.
