My husband and I were both raised as Jehovah’s Witnesses. Our families are still in very much in that religion, but we stopped believing the teachings about 12 years ago. We were married very young, and as we had children we realized that we didn’t want to raise our kids with the same restrictions we were raised with. We want them to be open minded without the sense of elitism that so many people in my family display. So, the real problem is that we’ve had a very hard time adapting in the ‘world’, especially regarding holidays. How do other people handle this strange conversion? Have you just started celebrating holidays to fit in? We’ve had no interest in other religions (we actually feel pretty fed-up with religion in general). For the most part, we’ll do birthdays and smaller holidays for the sake of our children, but it’s still awkward because there are no family traditions connected to these practices. Plus, my children get the feeling that they’re doing something wrong (from their grandparents), so their heart isn’t in it anyways. I’d love to know how other people have handled this. Thanks!
